When it comes to a definitive wow factor, nothing is more impressive than a flame-spitting car, but these vehicles are absolutely not inviting bystanders to come take a closer look.
Especially a modified Nissan, purposely build to barbecue everything behind it. Flame spitting, or after-fire as it’s formally known, occurs when un-burned fuel or hydrocarbons are ignited in the exhaust system, rather than inside the combustion chamber.
You didn’t hear it from us, but running a rich fuel-air mixture won’t burn accordingly and it will be spat in the hot exhaust system upon closing the throttle. Usually, the phenomenon is accompanied by a loud popping noise, even if the flame isn’t visible.
Of course, combusting unburned fuel in your exhaust system will damage (over time), the mufflers, the piping and the catalytic converter (providing the car still has one, since the majority of them don’t). Moreover, running rich translates into a weaker combustion and a loss of power, that’s why some will even go as far as fitting a gasoline injector into the exhaust to really set things on fire.
In a display of power and intimidation, this showing-off technique is somewhat harmless (unless you put your face near the exhaust, or live in a hay barn).
