The waiting game is on until Volvo starts removing layer upon layer of camouflage from their XC60 prototypes, as the Swedes now look to add another SPA platform-based car to their model range.
This is the second set of images we’ve received from our spy photographers outlining the 2018 XC60 SUV. Even though there are a few new angles to analyze, the car is so well covered up, it’s nearly impossible to draw any definitive conclusions about its styling. That is, other than the obvious ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED headlights and perhaps a more slender profile as the roof seems to slightly slope downwards towards the rear at a greater angle than what we see on the larger XC90.
Our spies already confirmed that this is actually a T5 petrol model, which comes with 254 PS (250 HP) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque, but more power-trains will be available, including several diesels and a plug-in hybrid.
Another feature noticed by our spies was a possibly lower window line than that of the current-generation model, something that would help with all-round visibility, and at the same time, draw some parallels to the BMW X3, which is also known for having a low window line.
Volvo will debut the all-new XC60 sometime next year, when it will assume the mantle of the first new-generation 60-series model. It will then be followed by a new S60, a new V60 and perhaps even a “C60” – a nameplate trademarked by Volvo back in November or last year.
All in all, there’s no denying that the new XC60 will have a lot to live up to, as the current model has been selling exceptionally well these past few years. Also, while Volvo will surely make significant improvements in terms of active safety, fuel efficiency and semi-autonomous driving, we hope they won’t forget to carry a couple of things over from the current car, such as its generous 230 mm (9.05 in) ground clearance – which back when the XC60 first came out, was superior to that of much larger models and made for a very strong selling point.
