Now, this is something you don’t see every day – and probably for a reason: a tuner offering an engine swap alongside a traditional tuning job for a BMW M model, in this case, dropping the M4’s straight-six into the new M2 Coupe.
Swiss firm Dähler Design & Technik GmbH says it’s preparing an entire series of “individualized” M2 Coupes, beginning with the “Competition Line” for the factory model with tuned versions of the stock N55 engine, continuing with the “Race Line” track racer and culminating with the aforementioned “Competition Line” model with an upgraded version of the S55 from the latest M3 sedan and M4 Coupe.
We’ll remind that you that in factory trim, the M2’s N55 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight six produces 370PS (365hp) at 6,500rpm and peak torque of 465Nm (343 lb-ft), allowing the coupe to hit 100km/h (62mph) from standstill in 4.5 seconds with a 6sp manual, and in 4.3 seconds with the optional 7sp dual-clutch DCT transmission, both featuring a restricted top speed of 250km/h (155mph).
The most interesting proposal from Dähler is, of course, is the S55-powered M2 Coupe. The Swiss outfit takes the M3/M4’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo six and tunes it to the state of 540PS (531hp) and a massive 730Nm (538 lb-ft) of torque, up from 431PS (425hp) and 550Nm (406 lb-ft) respectively, for a 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint in less than 4 seconds and a top speed of 320 km/h (199mph).
The tune is completed by a special lowered and fully adjustable coil-over suspension, a high-performance 8-piston brake system with 400mm disks, and a stainless steel exhaust system, all developed and produced in-house by Dähler. The only exterior changes made to the car are the black- trimmed bumper and side vents, plus the optionally available front lip spoiler, rear wing and 20-inch staggered wheels.
If you don’t feel like doing an engine swap – and we can surely understand why- on the M2, Dähler’s N55 Competition Line tunes the existing 3.0L unit in three stages, with the first pushing output to 408PS and peak torque to 600Nm for a 0-100km/h (62mph) run in under 4 seconds and a top speed of “around 300km/h” (186mph). With the Level 2 kit, you get 430PS and 630Nm, while the Level 3 tune, gives you 450PS, both offering a maximum speed in excess of 300km/h (over 186mph). The same chassis and exterior mods from the S55 M2 are offered on these models too.
Finally, the Swiss tuner says it’s developing a track conversion for the M2 that focuses on reducing the car’s weight by removing “unnecessary interior components and materials”, improving performance, chassis and aerodynamics, while also adding a roll cage, racing seat with six-point-seat-belt and track tires.
Dähler has yet to release pricing on any of the tuning programs it offers for the M2 Coupe.
