Though more recent efforts to relive their glory days may have been ill-advised, the “woodie” wagons of the 1940s and 50s had a certain undeniable charm to them. If you’re interested in picking up a cherry of an example, Detroit is naturally the place to be come the end of next month.
On July 30, RM Sotheby’s will hold its annual Motor City auction during the Concours d’Elegance of America at St. John’s in Plymouth, Michigan. The roster of lots already consigned includes a variety of vehicles – among them a number of classic woodies.
Arguably most notable among them is the 1948 Packard Eight Station Sedan that would be the company’s last woodie, pictured above, with a straight-eight engine and the first two-piece tailgate on the market.
There’s also a 1950 Ford V-8 Custom DeLuxe Station Wagon that pre-dates the Country Squire and was formerly the property of Hollywood actor Jon “Hurricane” Hall. Rounding out the list is a ’42 Ford Super DeLuxe and a ’47 Buick Roadmaster.
As you can see from the images below, they’re all in pristine condition, and would make a welcome addition to anyone’s country house. Now everybody pile in, we’re going out for frozen custard!
