Joining the long list of automakers whose vehicles have been equipped with defective Takata airbag inflators, General Motors has issued a preliminary recall.
The action concerns certain 2007-2011 full-size pickup trucks and SUVs including the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Avalanche, Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, Escalade EXT, Escalade ESV and the 2009-2011 Silverado, Sierra 2500 and Sierra 3500.
However, unlike previous cases of ruptured front passenger airbags, General Motors believes that the unique inflators supplied by Takata Motor Corp. don’t pose a threat, as they feature improved venting, unique propellant wafer configurations and machined steel caps, minimizing exposure to moisture from the climate control system. GM is not aware of any ruptured airbag inflators.
“GM expects to provide NHTSA with additional test data, analysis or other relevant and appropriate evidence in support of its belief that these GM vehicles do not pose an unreasonable risk to safety“, the automaker wrote.
General Motors will continue to cooperate with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and will take appropriate action if the Takata-supplied airbag inflators turn out to be unsafe. In the meantime, if you happen to own one of these affected vehicles, then expect a letter from the manufacturer, informing you of the condition and the next steps to be taken.
