Fiat’s new roadster is finally hitting the European market, just in time for the summer.

The new Fiat 124 Spider, known also as the Italian cousin of the Mazda MX-5, tries to mix retro styling features from its classic predecessor with modern touches. Things like the circular headlights, the sculpted bonnet or the hexagonal front grille are a direct nod to the 1966 original.

The cabin on the other hand is purely Mazda: The only major differences here are the materials used, with Fiat using leather with visible stitching for the seats, steering wheel and the gear lever’s boot and chrome-plated trims, giving the interior a more luxurious feel than its Japanese counterpart.

Customers in Europe can get the 124 Spider with any engine they like, as long as it’s the turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol unit. With 138hp and 177lb ft (240Nm) on tap, Fiat’s open-top two-seater can reach 62mph from nought (0-100km/h) in 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 133mph (215km/h). Fiat claims a kerb weight of just over a tonne, at 1050kg.

The seven-inch infotainment system will be an optional feature to both trim levels, offering HD Radio, MP3 player, two USB ports, auxiliary socket, six speakers, multimedia control and Bluetooth connectivity. The more expensive Lusso models also get a rear-view camera and a 3D navigation system.

The Fiat 124 Spider is available in two trim levels – 124 Spider and Lusso – each one available with eight different body colours: two pastel shades (Passione Red and Gelato White), five metallic shades (Vesuvio Black, Argento Grey, Moda Grey, Magnetico Bronze and Italia Blue) and the three-coat Ghiaccio White. The order books are now open with sales of the new Fiat 124 Spider in Italy starting on June 18th, starting from 27500 euros (around $31,000 in current exchange rates).
