When it comes to incidents involving cars and bicycles, people tend to generally pick one side or the other, with many always pointing a finger at the slower moving object. This time however both may be at fault.
The incident took place in Santa Ana, California and involved a cyclist running into a truck that apparently cut him off without even checking his mirrors. That, or he did it on purpose, which is what the person who originally posted the clip seems to hint at.
The same truck is captured by the cyclist’s helmet cam around the 12-second mark speeding past him and eventually making a right turn before the next light. The cyclist then goes on to cross the intersection, gets passed by the same truck at the 1 min 28 second mark and fails to apply the brakes in time to avoid a collision. Thankfully it didn’t look like anything serious.
What do you guys think? Does it qualify as a hit and run? Certainly, once they collided, the truck driver should have stopped and fleeing the scene isn’t going to earn him any sympathy. However, if we were to give him the benefit of the doubt (before he split that is), he may have just miscalculated how close the bicycle was and how fast the cyclist was pedaling.
Another thing worth noting is that the truck driver did use his turn signal and the cyclist didn’t seem to pick up on it. The man said in the comments section that he did try to brake but it was too late. Though if he had been more vigilant, he may have been able to slow down and then stop just in time.
