Peugeot, Citroen and DS are currently planning for an anxiety free electric and hybrid future, where their 12kWh batteries (13kWh for SUVs) will have 12 times the capacity of existing PHEV packs, while offering 20-30% more power.
Normally, the operating range for these types of batteries is 210-350V (240-400V for SUVs), with a 3.3Kw onboard charger that can top up PHEVs in 4.5 hours/2.5 hours if you’ve got a 6.6kW fast charger installed.
However, PSA’s 7kW onboard charger can give you enough charge in 90 minutes for a range of 62 miles (100 km), while a full charge would take eight hours. Now, with a wall-mounted fast charger, battery electric vehicle owners would be good for an 80% charge in 30 minutes, with a rate of 7.5 miles (12 km) per minute of additional range.
As reported by Autocar, PSA Group chairman Carlos Tavares is currently trying to send out a clear message regarding clean energy and how important it is for the electrification of cars.
“Having clean powertrain technologies and zero-emissions mobility devices is not enough. If the energy generation process is not clean then it is not going to deliver an appropriate result. This is an engineers’ company. It has always been that way and will continue to be that way.”
PSA is also looking to increase their R&D efficiency, which should help the group save about €1.5 billion over the span of five years, or roughly €300m per year.
