Just five days after receiving his car, the owner of a brand-new Tesla Model X saw his ride destroyed when it purportedly accelerated on its own in a parking lot and crashed into a building.

In a posting on the TeslaForum, user ‘Puzant’ blamed the automaker, stating that “Tesla should stop deliveries and investigate the cause of this serious accident“, as the car “suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated at high speed on its own, climbing over 39 feet of planters and crashing into a building“, while entering a parking stall.

As a result, “the airbags deployed and my wife’s arms have burn marks“, he added, while being grateful that there were no fatalities: “This could have easily been a fatal accident if the car’s wheels were not turned slightly to the left. If they were straight, it would have gone over the planters and crashed into the store in front of the parking stall and injured or killed the patrons.”

After contacting Tesla roadside assistance, he was asked to tow the vehicle to storage, which he did, but not before taking a few photos of the aftermath.

At the time of writing, Tesla has not issued an official statement related to this crash, which follows an earlier incident when the Summons feature was blamed for “parking” a Model S underneath a trailer and another involving the Autopilot’s TACC (Traffic-Aware Cruise Control) that failed to automatically apply the brakes, crashing the electric sedan into a stopped van. The latter cases were both found to be improper use of the semi-autonomous system.

Thanks to Mitch for the heads up!

Update: Tesla responded to the incident with a statement saying that, after reviewing the logs from the vehicle at the time of the accident, it determined that it was the driver’s fault:

“We analyzed the vehicle logs which confirm that this Model X was operating correctly under manual control and was never in Autopilot or cruise control at the time of the incident or in the minutes before. Data shows that the vehicle was traveling at 6 mph when the accelerator pedal was abruptly increased to 100%. Consistent with the driver’s actions, the vehicle applied torque and accelerated as instructed. Safety is the top priority at Tesla and we engineer and build our cars with this foremost in mind. We are pleased that the driver is ok and ask our customers to exercise safe behavior when using our vehicles.”
