Unlike with the Model S and the Model X, supercharging your Model 3 won’t be free unless you purchase a special package.

During Tesla’s annual shareholders meeting in California, Elon Musk provided us with more insight into what we can expect once Model 3 deliveries get under way in late 2017.

“Free supercharging fundamentally has a cost,” said Musk. “The obvious thing to do is decouple that from the cost of the Model 3. So it will still be very cheap, and far cheaper than gasoline, to drive long-distance with the Model 3, but it will not be free long distance for life unless you purchase that package.”

Unfortunately, the Tesla boss didn’t provide further clarification about what that “package” would be or how much it would cost, but according to Autonews, he did say he’s hoping some of his customers can grow out of the habit of supercharging their car when they could just as easily do it at home.

“The best thing to do is to charge your car where you charge your phone: at home and at work,” added Musk.

On long journeys however, using any of the 632 worldwide available Superchargers is the way to go, seen as how they can deliver 170 miles of range in only 30 minutes time.
