Part of the modern automotive “Holy Trinity”, the 918 is Porsche’s most advanced production vehicle to date, as it utilizes the car maker’s vast expertise, acquired from its extensive racing heritage and pedigree.
The 918’s engine, which weighs 135 kg (298 lbs), by the way, is built on the same architecture on the one used by the RS Spyder Le Mans prototype. It has no accessory-drive belts, and its cams are chain-driven, which is a good thing, considering that any kind of complex servicing on the engine requires the car being split in half, as it’s composed of two main sections: the passenger shell and the engine cradle.
Its $845,000 price was a lot to swallow, but Porsche actually lost money on each one they built. The model showed in the video comes with the optional ‘Weissach Package’ which, for $84,000 over the standard price, will shed a few pounds of “fat” from the already lightweight package. It includes the optional $32,500 magnesium wheels, and came unpainted from the factory, with only a vinyl wrap over its carbon fiber body, that way Porsche saved 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds).
