As one of the most recognizable Mustang variants of the last two decades, the Cobra R is a true favorite among enthusiasts. Just 300 units were produced and one of them is currently for sale on eBay Motors representing a true gem for pony car aficionados.
This particular 2000 Mustang Cobra R is number 135 and amazingly, has only been driven 84.5 miles since leaving the factory. It is so pristine in fact that it still has the original window stickers and plastic across the black leather bucket seats.
Making the Cobra R so special at its launch was its extensively modified 5.4-liter V8 tuned to pump out in the region of 385 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque (522 Nm). While those figures seem unsubstantial compared to the 526 hp of the current Shelby GT350R, they were enough to rocket the 2000 Cobra R to 60 mph (96 km/h) in a supercar-rivalling 4.7 seconds and a top speed exceeding 170 mph (273 km/h).
To keep the weight down, Ford removed the air conditioning, radio, speakers and rear seats from the car and outfitted it with lightweight Recaro front seats, racing shocks and springs, 18-inch aluminum wheels, upgraded brakes, side-pipe exhaust and an improved radiator and oil cooler.
At the time of the car’s launch, it set customers back $54,995, about the same as the current GT350 range. This example now has an asking price of $79,995 making it more expensive than a base C7 Corvette Z06. Given its desirability however, it could continue to rise in value.
