The head of Jeep, Mike Manley, has confirmed to Automotive News that the impending Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models will sit atop the firm’s range of SUVs.
Both models will arrive sometime after 2019 and both will act as luxurious SUVs based around the next-generation Grand Cherokee. As its name implies, the Grand Wagoneer will be the more expensive and exclusive derivative of the ‘regular’ Wagoneer, itself significantly different to the Cherokee.
During the interview, Manley said: “The Wagoneer name represents, historically, the pinnacle of premium for the Jeep world. But in the same way as you may have an Overland and a Summit, you have different trim levels. So you could imagine the use of Wagoneer to denote a really premium vehicle, and Grand Wagoneer takes it to the very next level. If you were to use that as your naming strategy, that’s exactly how I would use the trims.”
When the Grand Wagoneer reaches the market later this decade, it will come almost 30 years after the demise of the original. Production of the two models will be handled by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Warren Truck Assembly facility in Detroit.
