Due to poor sales, particularly in the United States, Autoline is reporting that the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider won’t live beyond 2020, scrapping any chance of a second-generation model.

The website focuses solely on the drop-top variant of the 4C sports car but if that model is scrapped in 2020, it seems probable that the 4C Coupe will be as well.

In the United States, the Italian manufacturer has only sold 309 examples of the 4C Spider this year, barely any more than the 320 Dodge Vipers delivered.

Given that the 4C was the marque’s first model offered in the United States as part of its global relaunch, expectations were high that it would sell well and pave the way for the success of future Alfas in the market, particularly the Giulia sedan.

If the 4C is indeed scrapped after just one generation, it will mark the end of what was always a hit-or-miss car. It remains the only semi-affordable road car to utilize a carbon fiber monocoque chassis and therefore weighs less than 1,000 kg (2,200 pounds). Power is provided by a unique turbocharged 1.75-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Power is funnelled through the rear wheels and interestingly, the car does without any form of power steering.
