BMW has revealed that it’s joined forces with a team in the Formula E championship, just a week after reports emerged suggesting such a partnership was on the cards.
While the company’s motorsport director Jens Marquardt didn’t specify which team BMW has team up with, Motorsport says that it is probably the Andretti Formula E team. All Marquardt would reveal is that the marque has an engineering co-operation with an unnamed team.
While speaking with the press, the director said that the current format of swapping cars mid-race isn’t ideal for the promotion of electric vehicles, hinting that when each driver gets his own car from season five, BMW’s involvement in the sport could strengthen.
“For sure, the change of car that is still in place is, from our point of view, with regards to the range of electric vehicles is not ideal. But there is a path to season five to get this into a better solution and we keep monitoring the situation.
“There is huge potential on the marketing side, but there is also a lot of work that needs to be done to lift that potential, to bring the series forward and make it more attractive for people to be involved,” he said.
