With Ford and Ferrari back at it in sportscar racing, it would be all too easy to forget about the Corvette Racing team. But the all-American squad was there to remind us that it’s still a powerhouse, taking its 100th win this weekend at Lime Rock Park.
Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner drove their #4 Corvette C7.R to fifth place overall and first in the GTLM class in the Northeast Grand Prix, the eighth round of the 2016 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
This landed the Corvette duo first in their class, crucially beating out Chip Ganassi’s Ford GTs and the Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTEs. The checkered flag not only marked Corvette Racing’s 100th victory, but also its 60th 1-2 finish as Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen piloted their the #3 car to second place in class.
Renger van Der Zande and Alex Popow took first overall for Starworks Motorsport in their Oreca FLM09 prototype. Further down the order, Andy Lally and John Potter drove the Audi R8 LM3 to win the GTD class with Magnus Racing.
The Corvette team started out at Daytona back in 1999, and has since gone on to collect a staggering array of trophies. GM’s team has taken three class wins – and an overall victory – in the Rolex 24 at Daytona. It has won its class at Le Mans eight times. It’s taken ten class wins in the 12 Hours of Sebring. And it won nine drivers’, 10 teams’ and 10 manufacturers’ titles in the American Le Mans Series.
Its achievements were capped last year when it won at Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans to take the unofficial Triple Crown of endurance racing.
