FCA is considering building a large SUV based around the same platform as used by the Ram 1500 pickup.
The new model could rival the likes of the Chevrolet Tahoe and provide the automaker with a competitor in the expanding market that also includes a number of Ford models.
While speaking with USA Today, head of Fiat Chrysler’s Jeep and Ram brands, Mike Manley, revealed that the Ram 1500’s platform is suitable for a large SUV.
“You have the opportunity with a new frame for the next-generation Ram. You have the opportunity to take a large SUV off of it because we already have a very, very capable frame today that is going to be upgraded,” he said.
The next-generation Ram pickup is set to hit the market in January 2018 meaning a possible large SUV would likely arrive in 2019.
Given the popularity of SUVs, it’s no surprise that Fiat Chrysler is mulling such a car. In 2015, General Motors sold over 200,000 examples of its Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade models, all of which share the same platform.
