It might have been uncovered last month at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, yet the Merc-AMG GT R is still four months away from going on sale.
That gives Affalterbach engineers a bit of extra time for testing, and one of the best combinations available is the sharp corners of the Nurburgring with some real-world driving. The wrap used in the test vehicle sure is less flashy than the matte green on the Goodwood car, yet even sothe most potent member of the Mercedes-AMG GT family has made its presence felt in the German traffic.
It’s still too early to talk about its price tag, but it could end up making its future owners’ bank accounts almost $200,000 lighter. Lots of cash, but this is beefed up version of the AMG GT S, with aero to make it look like a street-legal GT3.
Moreover, this is also the only model of the lineup to feature rear-wheel steering, which works in two stages, turning the wheels in the same direction to the front ones at speeds over 100 km/h (62 mph) and in the opposite direction under that mark. Factor in that it has lost 90 kg (199 lbs) and its 4-liter twin-turbo V8 has been massaged to deliver an extra punch on top of the lesser GT S and it starts making sense why anyone would drop a small fortune on one.
