Mercedes’ F1 boss Toto Wolff has revealed that any more crashes between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg could result in team orders, suspensions or even race bans for the duo.

The two are currently locked in one of the most fascinating championship fights in recent years, with Hamilton bouncing back in the last few races after his lack-luster start to the season, currently sitting just 1 point behind Rosberg, the championship leader.

However, a crash at the Austrian Grand Prix last week was the last thing the team wanted and prompted Wolff to get his claws out.

Talking to German television, Wolff said: “Such things are not the ideal scenario, of course. But the two of them have a great responsibility to this brand Mercedes, for our team spirit and our partners and sponsors, and for all of the Mercedes employees around the world. If all of this work is thrown away with a collision, then at some point there has to be a sanction. It must come to an end.”

When questioned if race bans were on the cards, Wolff firmly said “yes, that may be a consequence.”

Having secured the two previous drivers’ world championships, Hamilton started the 2016 season as the firm favorite. However, Rosberg has led the championship race since Melbourne, having claimed the first four races as well as the European Grand Prix.
