Elon Musk, a man who is never satisfied with his innovations, wants to open a multitude of lithium-ion battery producing gigafactories around the world, mimicking the current one in Nevada.
While Tesla’s Nevada gigafactory will already become the largest producer of lithium-ion batteries in the world, Musk thinks it’s a good idea to open similar factories on different continents when the demand for batteries reaches such a level.
Speaking on a BBC radio program, Musk said “Obviously long term it’s going to make sense to have a Gigafactory in Europe, one in China and probably one in India.
“Ultimately, wherever there is a huge amount of demand for the end product, and where the shipping costs are to become significant, then the obvious way to optimise that is to put the Gigafactory on the same continent, or at least within reasonable logistics range of the end customer,” Musk said.
The Nevada gigafactory is only 14 per cent complete and by next year, it’ll only be 31 per cent finished so if Tesla does indeed feel it necessary to build more, don’t expect to see them for decades.
