Remember the minivan? Sure, they still make them. But fewer and fewer American families are buying them. We typically figure that’s because they prefer crossovers now, but that’s only part of the story.

According to Ford, over the first six months of 2016, the Transit van outsold ever other van on the market in the United States – and that includes minivans. That means that the Ford Transit hasn’t just outsold the Ram ProMaster and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, but also family favorites like the Dodge Grand Caravan, Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey.

Of course the Transit is purchased for a variety of purposes, not just transporting families. In addition to the passenger wagon, Ford offers the Transit as a cargo van, chassis cab, and cutaway, with a variety of roof heights, wheelbases, body lengths and engine options, ratcheting up to 64 available configurations. But sales of the passenger version alone increased by a massive 30 percent over last year.
