Audi will kiss goodbye the current A1 model with a proper RS version, scheduled for launch in January 2017 according to the latest reports.
The new, ultra-hot hatch will be powered by a 280hp version of the Group’s turbocharged 2.0-litre EA888 engine that will send its power to all four wheels, says Autocar.
It is understood that the upcoming RS1 will be a sister car to the also planned VW Polo R, with Audi benchmarking the Mini John Cooper Works in terms of handling. A six-speed manual gearbox will be offered as standard, while a new seven-speed dual clutch automatic that can handle the torque load of the engine will be an option.
The new Audi RS1 will be a regular production model and therefore the company will be able to price it more competitively against its rivals, unlike what happened with the limited A1 Quattro special that was deemed too expensive when new.
Audi will offer the RS1 in both available bodystyles, three- and five-door, just like the S1 which currently stands at the top of the A1’s range. This will be the swansong of the small Audi as the company is going to reveal its successor in 2018 which is going to be based upon the MQB platform.
As for the performance numbers, with the current Audi S1 able to accelerate from zero to 62mph (0-100km/h) in 5.8 seconds, expect the new RS1 to complete the same procedure in the low 5s.
