A problem with the driveshafts in some of its vehicles has prompted BMW to issue a recall in the United States. It’s only for 956 units, but they’re some of the most exciting vehicles the company makes.

The recall covers the M5 sedan as well as the M6 coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe from the 2015 model year. All those models share the same engine: a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 rated at 560 horsepower, but available in those four different bodystyles.

According to the notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Administration, the driveshaft “may have been inadequately welded during manufacturing.” A fracture could result, disrupting power delivery to the rear wheels – and potentially letting the car roll away when parked on an incline, even with the hand brake applied.

Replacing a driveshaft is no quick fix, but that’s what it will take to fix the vehicles in question. Owners of the affected vehicles should expect to hear from the manufacturer to arrange service at their local dealership starting September 6.
