A 2018 BMW M5 prototype free of any excessive body cladding was recently snapped doing the rounds at the Nurburgring, offering us a chance to see and hear the car in action.
Based around the yet-to-be-revealed G30-generation 5-Series, the new M5 will be lighter, more powerful, faster and more luxurious than even before thanks to a host of technical and mechanical innovations.
Pivotally, weight is expected to drop by as much as 100 kg (220 pounds) thanks to the use of carbon fiber, aluminum and other lightweight materials in the car’s construction.
Providing the punch will be BMW’s existing twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 benefiting from a host of power and torque improvements, inevitably resulting in a round 600 hp figure.
The lower weight and greater power will make the G30 M5 that little bit quicker, but it will be the availability of an optional all-wheel drive system that’ll really give the car supercar levels of acceleration and grip.
Inside, the new M5 will receive a host of new features found elsewhere within the next-gen 5-Series range. These are expected to include semi-autonomous driving systems, fully digital displays and a suite of new safety features.
