According to a story from Autocar, Nissan could launch an all-electric sports car by 2020.
While speaking at the launch of Nissan’s BladeGlider concept, director of electric vehicles for Nissan Europe, Gareth Dunsmore, revealed that the Japanese firm has the ability to produce an electric sports car now but demand for such a model is unlikely to warrant its creation before the turn of the decade.
“As we head towards 2020 you’ll see greater moves towards EVs. Governments are starting to support the move towards climate change objectives, and to get to that point needs a huge shift towards electric mobility,” Dunsmore said.
In the interim, Nissan believes that the launch of concept cars like the electric BladeGlider will help to change perceptions of battery-powered sports cars as the firm, like so many others, aims to launch a range of electric vehicles in the coming years.
Before a potential Nissan electric sports car sees the light of day, the R36-generation GT-R will be launched. Rather than being electric, it is expected to use a hybrid powertrain combining an engine spawned from the unsuccessful LMP1 racer and a battery/electric motor setup courtesy of Williams.
