Ford has confirmed that production of the all-new GT will last four years, two years longer than previously confirmed.

The American marque initially said that in the first two years of production, just 500 units would be built. However, there was always an inkling that the vehicle’s run would be extended given the huge demand for the third-generation Ford GT.

While Ford has yet to announce how many GTs it will produce in year three and four of production, it has revealed that those who missed out on the initial allocation after applying will be put on a waiting list for production year three. Remaining applicants and those who missed the initial application window will be able to apply for a GT in the final year of production from early 2018.

According to global director of Ford Performance, “While we can’t build enough Ford GTs for everyone who has applied, we are going to produce additional vehicles in an effort to satisfy more of our most loyal Ford ambassadors. We want to keep Ford GT exclusive, but at the same time we know how vital this customer is to our brand.”

Raj Nair, the firm’s executive vice president of production development and chief technical officer extended on this by saying “Ford GT has racing in its blood. The road car and race car will live on, side-by-side, for the next four years – providing ample opportunity to test and prove innovative new technologies both on and off the track.”
