Hyundai may not be challenging for titles in the World Rally Championship just yet, but it’s off to a competitive start so far with drivers like Dani Sordo and Thierry Neuville behind the wheel. So it should come as no surprise that the Korean team has opted to retain Sordo for another two years.
The 33-year-old Spanish rally driver has competed in the WRC since 2003, achieving 39 podium finishes so far – including a solitary win, achieved at the 2013 Rallye Deutschland. He drove for Citroën for several seasons, and for Mini when it was in the series, but he’s been competing for Hyundai since the automaker returned to top-level rallying two years ago.
Now Sordo and Hyundai have formalized their relationship with a two-year extension that will take them together through the end of 2018, at the earliest.
Sordo currently sits sixth in the drivers’ standings, with his teammate Neuville in fourth, and their team in second for the manufacturers’ title. Dani’s best seasons to date came in 2008 and 2009 when he finished third in the standings while driving for Citroën.
