Unrelated to Takata’s massive airbag inflator scandal, MINI has issued a safety campaign that covers certain 2016-2017 Clubman.
Identified by the supplier, Poland-based Autoliv, during a test, an inappropriate pre-perforation of the fabric cover that surrounds the side curtain airbag could prevent them from deploying as intended along the A-pillar, which means those vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor vehicle Safety Standard.
Acknowledging the risk of injury, MINI has ordered a stop delivery of 4,867 units of the Clubman, produced between August 19, 2015, and July 14, 2016, out of which roughly 2,670 are still found in dealer inventories, until the condition will be solved.
Parent company BMW of North America will notify owners of the affected vehicles and dealers will modify the driver and passenger side curtain airbag covers free of charge.
The recall is expected to kick off on September 12, but owners can contact BMW Customer Service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for further details. BMW and MINI haven’t received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition.
