Jaguar Land Rover has applied to renew its trademark for the Defender name before the next-generation model launches towards the end of the decade.
The automaker originally applied to renew its trademark in Europe back in May and on August 4, did the same in the Philippines. While both applications are still pending, they’re expected to be approved and are just the latest move on JLR’s part to relaunch the famed off-roader.
While an ambitious businessman wants to keep the original Defender on the market, potentially under a new name, the latest-generation model should be a significant improvement over the old car in all areas.
Details about the new Defender, mooted to debut in 2019, are thin on the ground but Autocar asserts that an expanded family of models will debut and resurrect the car.
Beyond an increased range of body styles, the enlarged family could include and extreme off-road variant dubbed the SVX and developed by the firm’s Special Vehicle Operations division.
