One of the most successful operations in the history of motorsport, McLaren has racked up race wins in everything from Formula One and Le Mans to Can-Am and Indy. And now it can add another class of racing to its trophy cabinet as the new 570S has won its first GT4 race.
McLaren revealed the new 570S GT4 just this past March, and immediately set upon a development cycle that would catapult it directly into competition. It’s since been contesting rounds of the British GT Championship, alongside its big brother the 650S GT3 in the class above.
The season is winding to a close, but before it does, the new McLaren 570S GT4 has managed to score its first win in the penultimate round at Snetterton this weekend.
Fielded by the Black Bull Ecurie Ecosse team and driven by Sandy Mitchell and Ciaran Haggerty, the McLaren qualified third in the first race, leapt into the lead in the pits and held on to cross the finish line three tenths of a second ahead of it closest rival.
The racing model in McLaren’s Sports Series challenged for the lead in the second race. But it suffered damage early on, dropped to the back of the field while repairs were carried out, then fought its way up the 17-car order again only to fall just short of the podium.
Altogether not bad for a car that didn’t exist just a few months ago, and you can bet we’ll be seeing more of it in the season ahead.
