If you’ve driven a vehicle equipped with a continuously variable transmission, you may have noticed a certain lag between when you hit the accelerator and the vehicle actually picks up speed. It’s something we’ve come to expect from CVTs, but it’s apparently gotten so bad in certain Mitsubishis that the Japanese automaker is recalling over 80,000 vehicles to address the issue.

The recall affects the 2015-16 Outlander Sport, 2016 Outlander, and 2016 Lancer – for a total of 82,436 units in the United States alone. According to the statement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, fixing the lagging acceleration will involve simply reflashing the software in the transmission control unit with a new algorithm, which Mitsubishi evidently hopes will be enough to make its vehicles feel peppier.

Owners should already have started receiving instructions in the mail to arrange service at their local dealership. This is the second CVT-related recall we’ve seen from Mitsubishi this month alone.
