A stunning Mazda 767B is heading to Monterey Car Week and will hit the famed Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca from August 19 to August 21.
This particular example competed at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1989. While not nearly as iconic as the 787B that won the race outright two years later, it will be one of the attractions at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Ken Saward, design manager of Mazda North American Operations (MNAO), will be at the driver’s seat for the occasion.
A dedicated crew from Downing/Atlanta are responsible for the compete restoration. To bring the 767B back to its former glory, they stripped it down to its bare tub and rebuilt it piece by piece. The four-rotor 13J engine was also rebuilt and is just as ferocious, loud and powerful as it was some 27 years ago, with 630 hp and one of the greatest-sounding race engines of all times.
According to president and chief executive of MNAO and managing executive officer of Mazda Motor Corporation, Masahiro Moro, “Mazda has a never give up attitude and it is exemplified in the 767B. The race track is the perfect environment to showcase our history of continuous innovation. We use our historic racecars, not as static reminders of the past, but rolling, screaming, fire-breathing brand ambassadors for the future.”
