Money no object, which road-car based racer would you go for? For us, it’d be the McLaren F1 GTR.
Not only does the F1 GTR have a fearsome racing pedigree having dominated the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours but it is also one of the most staggeringly beautiful race cars ever, perfectly meshing together the glorious flowing design of the road-legal F1 with a number of bold and provocative aerodynamic aids.
McLaren built just 28 GTR variants of the iconic F1 and among the finest of them is this particular ‘short tail’ example with a Fina livery.
While the car is probably worth in excess of $5 million, it recently hit the famed Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with BMW factory driver Bill Auberlen behind the wheel.
The thrilling six and a half minute clip is filmed from the visor of Auberlen and shows the iconic racing car being driven to its limits as the 6.0-liter naturally-aspirated V12 sings a glorious symphony. This is what dreams are made of. Petrolheads’ dreams, anyway.
