Just after Tesla Motors announced its intention to purchase Elon Musk’s SolarCity for $2.6 billion, Musk’s energy company revealed it will soon unveil a complete solar roof rather than simply using solar modules on an existing roof.
Eletrek says the move to complete solar roofs will be helped drastically by SolarCity’s collaboration with Tesla and promises to provide something previously unseen in the industry.
Such a roof could prove particularly intriguing for home owners who need to replace their existing roofs due to damage. Rather than opting to have another tiled roof fitted, SolarCity’s chief executive Lyndon Rive said that it makes much more sense to opt for a solar roof, producing more than enough energy to power a house.
Tesla’s involvement in this project isn’t known, but it’s possible the electric automaker’s PowerWall systems could work alongside the solar roof to store the energy captured from the sun.
