Alongside yesterday’s announcement of the 100kWh battery pack for the Model S and Model X, it has emerged that the automaker has subtly raised the price of its popular Autopilot system.
Since October 2014, all Tesla vehicles have been outfitted with the hardware to run the semi-autonomous driving system. However, buyers have to pay $2,500 when ordering the car to have the features enabled or $3,000 after the vehicle has been delivered.
From yesterday, those prices have increased to $3,000 and $3,500 respectively, representing a 20 per cent jump in price.
Although buyers are unlikely to be dismayed by the price rise, Electrek reports that Tesla may be looking to increase its margins for the feature hence the change. An official company spokesman said the new price better reflects the value of the product.
As always, Autopilot can be easily updated over-the-air and soon, new Tesla software will be released with improved Autopilot functionality. In the not too distant future, hardware upgrades will also be adopted as Tesla’s pushes the system to become fully autonomous.
