Driver’s knee airbag-equipped right-hand drive 86s could suffer a potential loss of power steering assist.
Toyota has already started taking measures by announcing a recall for almost 15,000 examples in Australia, built between April 9, 2012, and March 18, 2015.
In these vehicles, due to an improper harness layout, the electric power steering (EPS) harness could interfere with the instrumental panel lower cover, which contains the driver’s knee airbag, leading to a possible electrical contact failure.
The loss of power steering assist will increase the steering effort at low speeds and trigger a warning light that will illuminate the dashboard, along with a short audible warning, to make sure that the driver is aware of the defect. No accidents or injuries related to this issue have been reported.
Toyota Australia will notify owners of the compact sports coupe by mail, requesting them to make an appointment at an official dealer. The repair is said to take just over an hour and includes the replacement of the power steering electronic control unit and wire harness. The repairs will begin next month.
The manufacturer has yet to announce whether other right-hand drive markets, such as Japan or the United Kingdom, will issue a similar recall, but we will keep you posted.
