If you wanted the fastest current-production FWD car around the Nurburgring but still didn’t make up your mind yet, you probably missed out on what is described to be the ultimate Golf.
Powered by a 310PS version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre TFSI engine, the Golf GTI Clubsport S model was not only created to be the fastest around the Green Hell but also to celebrate 40 years since the original came out.
Of course posting a lap time of 7m 49.21s there wasn’t just because of that engine; VW revised many components and stripped the car of its rear seats, insulating material, the variable luggage compartment floor, the parcel shelf, floor mats and the bonnet damping to tip the scales at just 1,285kg.
0-62mph (0-100km/h) comes in 5.8 seconds with the top speed set at 164mph (265km/h). A manual six-speed gearbox is the only option. Peak torque is rated at 280lb ft (380Nm) and is delivered constantly between 1,850rpm and 5,700rpm.
VW UK had set a recommended retail price at £33,995 OTR with the Clubsport S being available in three colors: ‘Tornado Red’, ‘Pure White’ and ‘Deep Black’. Customers were given the chance of adding air-conditioning as a no-cost option which adds around 10kg to the car.
Total production run of the VW Golf GTI Clubsport S will be just 400 units, with the first UK cars expected to be delivered in early October.
