There’s only a handful of countries where you can buy a new Acura. The United States is one of them, of course, but so is Canada. And Honda’s luxury division just sold its 500,000th vehicle in the True North.
The landmark vehicle is a 2017 Acura RDX, delivered to one Baharak Ayenesima in Toronto. The RDX is far and away Acura’s most popular model in Canada, outselling the larger MDX and accounting for close to half of the brand’s sales in the country. In fact, after the volume-oriented Civic, Accord, HR-V, CR-V, and Pilot, the RDX is one of Honda Canada’s top sellers.
Acura launched in both Canada and the United States in 1987, beating Lexus and Infiniti to the punch. In the nearly 30 years since, the brand has gone from selling two models at 20 dealers across Canada to a full lineup sold through a network of 51 dealers. By now, Acura also sells in Mexico as well as Hong Kong, China, Russia, and Kuwait. Elsewhere many of its products are often sold under the Honda brand.
Acura even sold a model unique to Canada for years. The EL and subsequent CSX were premium versions of the Honda Civic, sold in Canada from 1997 through 2011 before the ILX arrived the following year.
