General Motors has made a pledge to only use electricity produced solely by renewable energy sources by the year 2050.

GM is one of many companies to have made this pledge as part of the RE100 organization. Other companies include Google, Coca-Cola, IKEA and Nike but each have a different date for when they will go renewable. Microsoft achieved its 100 per cent goal in 2014.

Considering the size of General Motors, the changes will be slow. In fact, the automaker has 350 facilities throughout the world which in the next 34 years, will all become completely renewable, thanks to solar, wind and landfill gas. As it stands, just 3.8 per cent of the firm’s electricity comes from renewable sources.

Factoring in the rate of development of electric cars and their batteries, there’s a good chance the vast majority of GM’s vehicles will be electric by the time 2050 comes by.
