Maserati is in the process of transforming itself from a niche exotic automaker to a mainstream luxury brand. That means not only increasing production and expanding into larger-volume market segments, but also improving quality. And few things could illustrate that process better than this latest recall.
According to the notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem boils down to the front wheel bearings, which could fail because they’re too soft. That could increase the risk of a crash, so Maserati is recalling certain 2015 Ghibli sedans… a total of seven affected vehicles in all of the United States.
You read that right. Not seven hundred, not seven thousand, not seven million. Just seven units. Which tells us one of two things: either Maserati is markedly improving its quality, or it isn’t selling many Ghiblis.
Last year it moved just over 10,000 vehicles in the US last year across its entire range – or about as many vehicles as rival Jaguar sells in a month.
