Finishing eleventh in a third of your 2016 F1 races can get really old, really fast, according to Haas’ Esteban Gutierrez.

The 25-year old Mexican driver finished 11th yet again in Singapore last weekend, which was his fifth P11 result of the year. Also, while his teammate Romain Grosjean managed to secure 28 points for the American outfit, Gutierrez continues to have 0 next to his name.

“It’s boring to finish P11,” confessed Gutierrez during an interview with Autosport. “I don’t know how many more I’ve got in the system, but this consistency shows that we are very close to the points. We have to keep fighting, keep motivated.”

Looking back, his finishes in the past five races are P13, P11, P12, P13 and P11 – which do count as being on the outside looking in, rather similar to how McLaren performed last season.

Aside from Monaco and Singapore, Gutierrez has always been within less than 8 seconds of P10, which went to Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat in Spain, Manor’s Pascal Wehrlein in Austria and Force India’s Sergio Perez in Germany.

“It wasn’t easy [in Singapore] to find our way with the upgrades, so we can focus on that, try to optimize our parts. I hope to come back to Malaysia with a better view and better preparation to try to extract more from the upgrade.”

Despite finishing almost 17 seconds behind Magnussen’s Renault in Singapore, team boss Gunther Steiner remains pleased with how the Mexican performed on the street circuit.

“Esteban had a good weekend. He did what he needed to do. He finished 11th again, without points, but what can you do?”

With six races left on the calendar, Haas F1 fans will surely hope Gutierrez’s consistent form will have him finish higher than P11 at least once.
