Jaguar Land Rover has commenced production of its new 2.0-liter four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engines while also revealing details about a brand new automatic transmission it has developed.

Starting with the new four-cylinder engines, they’re the latest addition to the growing modular Ingenium family which use a common 500 cc per cylinder displacement, enabling easy flexibility and scalability.

While Jaguar hasn’t revealed outputs for the new engines, it says that they reduce fuel consumption by up to 15 per cent and deliver 25 per cent more power than the petrol engines they replace. Customers will be able to equip their cars with the new petrol engines from 2017.

Additionally, the British marque has developed an advanced new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with a ratio spread of 20:1 which it says improves fuel economy by almost 10 per cent and is 20 kg lighter than existing eight-speed automatics.

Dubbed TRANSCEND, the gearbox can be used in longitudinal rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles and according to Jaguar, will prove particularly useful for its off-road vehicles.

Group engineering director Nick Rogers said “Environmental innovation is at the heart of our strategy to dramatically reduce emissions up to 2020 and beyond. With the Ingenium family of powertrains and advanced research projects such as TRANSCEND, future Jaguar Land Rover vehicles will emit significantly less CO₂. By 2020, new technologies will help us reduce our CO₂emissions by a further 25 per cent.”
