Half of all new cars sold in 25 years will be fully autonomous, claims Kia in a new report.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of its launch in the UK, Kia conducted a report to predict the future of the motoring industry in 25 years time and if accurate, the automotive world as we know it will change drastically.

Beyond millions of self-driving vehicles hitting the streets, Kia suggests that in 25 years, motorways will be built with lanes dedicated to autonmous cars and that these vehicles will be able to communicate with the road, including in the detection of obstacles and potholes.

Additionally, the rise of autonomous cars could spell the end of parking tickets and high insurance premiums. The report asserts that because most self-driving vehicles will be able to drop people off before finding a suitable space to park by itself, owners will no longer have to worry about fines. Additionally, insurance premiums are expected to decrease dramatically as autonomous vehicles become safer than traditional vehicles and crashes becoming almost obsolete.

As we’re already beginning to learn, the rise of autonomous vehicles will also result in a dramatic increase in car sharing.

According to Dr. Frank Shaw who helped commission the report with Kia, “The future of the car industry is an exciting one, as there will be a transformation from an industry built by mechanics to one that is largely driven by software developers. There is considerable speculation in 2016 about autonomous driving, the full impacts of which will not become manifest until the 2040s. I am confident however that over the next twenty five years, the industry and technology companies will deliver a safer, more efficient and environmentally friendly driving experience for everyone.”
