The next-generation Jeep Wrangler is set to adopt aluminium for its doors and hood and potentially, a selection of other parts.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles chief executive Sergio Marchionne has previously confirmed that the model would use the lightweight material in some form. Now, JL Wrangler Forums has received word from an employee at Alcoa that the company will supply Jeep with its ‘6022’ form of aluminum.

Additionally, the employee also revealed that Alcoa will supply its 951 pre-treatment bonding technology for the aluminum sheets and its ‘C6A1’ high-form alloy, representing the first time this alloy will be used by a vehicle.

Over 12 months ago, it was thought that the new Wrangler may adopt a full aluminum body, similar to the new Ford F-150. That evidently won’t be the case but there’s a possibility other elements of the off-roader could be made from aluminum but sourced from companies other than Alcoa.

According to the latest word, the new Wrangler will arrive sometime next year with a subtly updated design before hitting the U.S. market as a 2018 model.
