Volkswagen is pondering the possibility of offering all-wheel drive to the standard Golf hatchback in North America.
During the launch of the Golf Alltrack, The Truth About Cars discovered from vice president of production marketing and strategy Dr. Hendrik Muth, that such a model is seriously being considered by the German manufacturer.
According to Muth, the addition of all-wheel drive production at VW’s manufacturing facility in Mexico has opened up this possibility as the firm hopes to attract customers away from Subaru and its entry-level, all-wheel drive models.
As it stands, VW offers the Golf R and Golf Alltrack exclusively with all-wheel drive, so implementing the system into the standard Golf hatchback wouldn’t be difficult.
At this stage, it isn’t known if having drive sent to all four wheels would be an optional extra available to all standard Golf variants and configurations or if it would serve as a standalone model.
