Subaru has yet to decide if a second-generation BRZ will launch, according to a report from Australia’s Car Advice.

Since sales of the BRZ and its Toyota cousin, the 86, commenced in Australia in 2012, the car has proven very popular among younger buyers, but Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior says that isn’t enough to confirm its future.

“I haven’t seen it [ a second-gen BRZ] on the product planning charts, but there’s talk of it. So I’m not sure,” he said.

“It’s brought new customers to the brand, there’s no doubt about it, younger customers. “And where it has been beneficial is younger customers that are sportier-orientated, have been probably not ready or probably couldn’t afford a WRX, but we’re seeing a few BRZ people – as they get a bit older and their income rises they move to a WRX.”

One road block which could make a second-generation BRZ difficult to produce is the fact that all future Subaru models will be underpinned by its upcoming global platform, meaning Toyota would have to use this architecture as well.

Additionally, Subaru is unlikely to create a new BRZ if it doesn’t get the help of Toyota also creating a second-gen 86. While that could happen, Toyota is currently focusing on another sports car, expected to revive the Supra name and currently being co-developed by BMW.
