If you’ve earned a reputation among your peers as an expert on cars, chances are someone at some point (if not regularly) has asked you “what’s the best car?” It’s a stupid question, because if there were one single “best car,” that’s the one we’d all be driving. But not if you ask Doug DeMuro. In his opinion, the single greatest car ever made is the Porsche Carrera GT. And now he’s had his chance to drive it.
Now “greatest car” is different from the “best car” in that you might not necessarily want to drive the “greatest” car day in, day out as you would the all-around “best” car. And the Carrera GT certainly fits the bill in that sense. It was originally envisioned as a racing car and was then toned down for the road, so it’s not exactly made for cruising. But what it lacks in creature comforts it more than makes up for with pure, unadulterated dynamic performance.
The mid-engined, ten-cylinder supercar has no turbochargers, no automated transmission, no all-wheel drive or four-wheel steering… it doesn’t even have stability control, and the biggest button on the dashboard is to switch off the traction control. So when we’re all being whisked about in self-driving electric cars and no longer allowed to drive ourselves on public roadways, and enthusiasts look back at the pinnacle of the driver-centric automobile, they may very well look to the Porsche Carrera GT. See what Doug has to say about it in the video below.
