You probably never heard about GKN, but they’re the guys behind the Focus RS’ AWD system. They’ve also contributed to the 918 Spyder’s plug-in hybrid program, and launched the world’s first two-speed eAxle in the BMW i8.
The company is a major component supplier with a very comprehensive CV. Back in May, GKN unveiled a system that uses electric all-wheel drive to boost performance and efficiency (and it’s currently underpinning the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer PHEV). But wait till you see their latest creation.
It’s a completely new full-electric eDrive module that’s designed for plug-in hybrids. According to GNK, the contraption integrates a water-cooled electric motor and inverter with a single speed eAxle reduction gearbox, and it will start production in 2019 on a global platform from a European car maker.
Measuring 300 mm in height and 325 mm in width, the rig weighs 54 kg, generates a maximum power of 65 kW, and can deliver up to 2000 Nm of torque to the rear wheels. That’s a staggering 1475 lb-ft, and GKN’s system expertise ensures that the motor, gearbox, and inverter delivers a smooth, near-silent driving experience.
“A new generation of vehicles is making hybridization integral to platform strategies. These complex drivelines require the higher levels of system integration that GKN eAxle electric drive modules deliver. By pioneering the development of these systems, GKN is positioned to help automakers turn electric propulsion into exciting new hybrid all-wheel-drive experiences”, said GKN Driveline Chief Executive Phil Swash.
Now, all we have to do is wait and see which car maker uses it beginning with 2019.
