Until now, the NYPD used a three-wheel scooter to move through the congested streets of the Big Apple. Not anymore.

Smart just announced that they’ve delivered 100 Smart ForTwo vehicles to the New York City Police, with another 150 soon to follow. The small vehicle appealed to the law enforcement agency due to its size, agility, and spaciousness – or at least that’s what Smart says.

And it’s not that hard to believe, especially as the latest Smart model respects the original’s recipe, while still adding more of everything. Oh, and compared to the three-wheel motorbikes, the Smarts also come with air conditioning, making work easier for those on patrol duty.

With a 0.9-litre turbo three-cylinder sending 89 hp and 100 lb-ft (135 nm) of torque to the rear wheels the Smart ForTwo can be a joy around town, and with the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint happening in less than a New York minute, you can rest assure few will outrun the cute automobile – in which case the NYPD has a fleet of 9000 vehicles ready to use.

Unlike the regular versions, the NYPD blue and white Smart cars come with a blue revolving roof lamp and police radio equipment. Also, the “NYPD Police” lettering will set them apart from the rest.

“The smart is spacious and agile and makes my job much easier. Many people say that the little patrol cars are really cute, too”, said Officer Ralph Jefferson, who took receipt of one of the first Smart ForTwos and drove it around Chinatown.
