Volkswagen’s new special-edition Beetle is about to hit showrooms. But before it does, the first example sold at a charity auction for $30,272, with proceeds going towards breast cancer care and research.
The first automobile, for better or worse, to carry its own hashtag as a nameplate, the #PinkBeetle was revealed last year as a concept at the 2015 New York Auto Show. Since announced for production, the pink bug features a special metallic fuchsia paintjob, gloss black trim, and other special touches, including GTI-style plaid seats in… you guessed it: pink.
Set to rearch dealers in October, the vehicle will retail for $21,890 in fixed-roof form, or $26,795 for the convertible. So while the price achieved at auction may not seem like that much relative to some VIN #001 muscle cars, it represents a nearly 50-percent premium over sticker.
Proceeds are earmarked towards The Pink Agenda breast cancer charity, which, among others, supports the Fab-U-Wish initiative to lift the spirits of women undergoing treatment.
As if that weren’t enough, Scott Speed and Tanner Foust will also be driving their Beetles with special pink liveries for Andretti Autosport in the upcoming Global Rallycross Championship season finale in LA.
